Why Does the Washing Machine Stop Mid-Cycle?
If your washing machine stops halfway through a wash, it’s often due to a minor fault rather than a major breakdown. Here are the most common reasons and what you can do to fix them.
1. Power or Control Issues
- Loose power connection — Check that the plug hasn’t come loose or that the circuit breaker hasn’t tripped.
- Faulty control board — If the machine freezes at the same point every time, the control module might be malfunctioning and may need professional repair.
2. Water Supply Problems
- Low water pressure — A weak flow can stop the cycle if the machine can’t fill fast enough.
- Blocked inlet filter — Sediment or limescale can clog the water inlet filter, restricting flow and halting the programme.
3. Drainage or Pump Blockages
- Clogged drain pump — Coins, lint or small items can block the pump and prevent the water from draining, causing the machine to stop.
- Blocked hose — Check the outlet hose for kinks or obstructions.
4. Unbalanced Load
If the laundry load becomes uneven during the spin cycle, the machine may pause automatically to protect the drum. Try redistributing the clothes evenly and restarting the cycle.
5. Sensor or Door Lock Faults
Modern washing machines rely on sensors for temperature, water level and drum balance. A faulty sensor or a loose door lock can interrupt the cycle unexpectedly.
When to Call a Professional
If the issue repeats or you notice burning smells, electrical noises or leaks, it’s best to stop using the appliance and contact an engineer. Continuing to run a faulty machine could make the problem worse.
Regular maintenance, checking filters and using the right detergent can prevent many mid-cycle stoppages — keeping your washing machine running smoothly.
