Noise on Induction Hobs (Buzzing & Clicking): Causes and Cures
If your induction hob makes buzzing A common sound caused by vibrations between the cookware and the hob’s magnetic field. or clicking Usually related to internal relays or rapid power adjustments during heating. noises, you’re not alone. These sounds are normal in most cases, and often come down to the type of pan you’re using or how the hob controls heat. Here’s a quick, clear guide to what’s normal — and when you can fix it.
What Causes Noise on an Induction Hob?
1. Pan vibration at high power levels
Induction works by transferring energy magnetically, which can make lighter or multi-layer pans vibrate. This is especially common on Boost mode or higher settings.
2. Internal clicking from power regulation
Most induction hobs have relays that switch on and off to maintain a stable temperature. Gentle clicking is normal, especially during low or cycling heat levels.
3. Poor pan-to-hob contact
Warped or thin pans don’t sit flat, causing irregular vibrations and extra noise. A perfectly flat base reduces buzzing dramatically.
Simple Cures to Reduce Buzzing and Clicking
Use heavier, well-made pans
Sturdy stainless steel or cast-iron pans tend to produce less noise. Avoid ultra-thin or lightweight cookware.
Lower the power slightly
Switching from Boost to level 7 or 8 often removes the buzzing while barely affecting cooking time.
Check that the pan base is clean and flat
Residue or burnt-on marks can stop the pan sitting evenly, increasing vibration noise.
When the Noise Isn’t Normal
If you hear unusually loud clicking, metallic clattering, or noise that increases over time, it could indicate a faulty fan, loose component, or damaged coil. In those cases, contact a professional or check your manufacturer’s support page.
