How to Stop Your Washing Machine Smelling Musty

How to Stop Your Washing Machine Smelling Musty

Has your washing machine started to smell musty or damp? This common issue is usually caused by a build-up of detergent, fabric softener, and trapped moisture — creating the perfect environment for bacteria and mould.

The good news? With a few simple habits, you can eliminate odours and keep your washing machine fresh.

1. Run a Hot Cleaning Cycle

At least once a month, run an empty cycle at 60°C or higher using a specialised washing machine cleaner or white vinegar.

This helps remove detergent residue, break down limescale, and kill bacteria hiding in the drum and pipework.

2. Clean the Door Seal

The rubber door seal is one of the main places where mould and grime build up. Wipe it regularly with warm, soapy water and check inside the folds for hidden residue.

3. Leave the Door and Drawer Open

After every wash, leave the door and detergent drawer slightly open. This allows air to circulate and prevents moisture from becoming trapped — one of the biggest causes of musty smells.

4. Wash the Detergent Drawer

Remove and rinse the detergent drawer every couple of weeks. Pay attention to corners and crevices where detergent sludge and mould often collect.

5. Check and Clean the Filter

A blocked filter can trap lint, debris, and dirty water. Cleaning it regularly improves drainage and prevents unpleasant odours from developing.
