Can Oven Racks Go in the Dishwasher?
Sometimes, yes. Stainless steel and chrome racks can generally go in the dishwasher without damage. Racks with a non-stick or enamel coating should not. The hot water, high-alkaline detergent, and heat of a dishwasher cycle degrades the coating over time. When in doubt, check your oven manual: most manufacturers specify whether the racks are dishwasher-safe, and their guidance takes priority over general advice.
By rack type
| Rack type | Dishwasher? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Stainless steel | Yes | Most durable option. Handles dishwasher cycles well. Dry promptly after the cycle to prevent water spotting. |
| Chrome-plated | With care | Generally safe, but frequent dishwasher use can cause gradual dulling and spotting. Occasional hand wash is better for longevity. |
| Non-stick coated | No | Dishwasher detergents are too harsh. The coating chips, flakes, and eventually peels. Hand wash only, using a soft cloth or sponge. |
| Enamel coated | No | Hot water and alkaline detergent damage the enamel surface. Chips and cracks follow, eventually exposing the underlying metal to rust. |

Two practical checks before loading: confirm the racks fit without blocking the spray arms (large racks can obstruct the upper arm in a standard dishwasher), and skip the heated drying cycle. The prolonged heat adds wear that the cold-dry option avoids.
For heavily baked-on grease, a dishwasher cycle alone will not do the job. Pre-soak the racks in hot water with a degreaser or bicarbonate of soda before loading. The dishwasher then handles the residual cleaning rather than the heavy lifting.
When the dishwasher is not an option
If your racks are coated, or simply too large to fit without blocking the spray arms, these methods work well for stubborn baked-on grease.

- Bath soak overnight. Lay an old towel in the bathtub, lay the racks flat on top, and fill with hot water and a generous amount of bicarbonate of soda. Leave overnight. The grease softens significantly and lifts easily with a non-scratch scrubber in the morning. Rinse and dry thoroughly before returning to the oven.
- Dishwasher tablet soak. Dissolve one or two dishwasher tablets in a large tub or a filled bath and submerge the racks for two to four hours. The enzymes and surfactants in the tablet break down baked-on grease effectively without requiring any scrubbing. Works well for racks with coatings that cannot go in the machine directly.
- Cleaning bag with oven cleaner. Purpose-made oven rack cleaning bags allow you to apply oven cleaner, seal the bag, and leave the racks to soak without the fumes spreading. Follow the product instructions for contact time, then rinse thoroughly. Do not use oven cleaner on non-stick or enamel coatings.
- Manual scrub. For light to moderate soiling, warm soapy water and a non-scratch sponge is sufficient. Apply a paste of bicarbonate of soda and water to stubborn spots, leave for 15 minutes, then scrub. Avoid steel wool or abrasive scourers on any coated surface.
