Induction Hob Child Lock: How It Works and When to Use It
The child lock on an induction hob disables the touch control panel so that pressing the controls has no effect. It is a standard feature on most induction hobs and takes about three seconds to activate, usually a press-and-hold on a key or padlock symbol on the control strip, confirmed by a beep or a lock icon on the display.
What it prevents: any change to hob settings from the control panel. What it does not prevent: a cooking cycle already in progress from continuing. If the hob is running when you activate the lock, it keeps running at the set power level. The lock freezes the controls, not the coil. This is intentional and useful, as explained below.
When to use it
Two types of lock on some models
Some induction hobs offer two distinct lock modes. A full panel lock disables all controls completely, including the power-on button, so the hob cannot be started at all. A cooking lock (sometimes called a key lock or safe guard mode) locks the controls during an active cooking session but still allows the hob to be switched off at the main power button in an emergency. Check your specific model’s manual. The distinction matters if you are relying on the lock for child safety and want to know whether the power-off button remains functional.
The child lock is one of several reasons induction is the safest hob type for households with young children. Combined with the cool-touch surface (the glass only picks up residual heat from the pan, not direct heat from the coil) and pan-detection that deactivates zones when a pan is removed, the lock adds a meaningful third layer of protection on top of the technology’s inherent safety advantages. For a broader comparison of hob safety across types, see the hob types comparison guide.
