What to Do if Your Cooker Hood Fan Sounds Like It’s Rattling

A rattling noise from your cooker hood can be annoying and may signal a loose or worn component. Here’s how to identify and fix the issue safely.

1. Turn Off and Inspect the Filters

Switch off the hood and remove the grease filters. Loose or clogged filters often vibrate when the fan runs. Wash them with warm soapy water, let them dry fully, and refit them securely.

2. Check for Loose Screws or Panels

Over time, vibration from the fan can loosen screws, panels, or the chimney section. Tighten any visible fittings and make sure the hood is firmly secured to the wall or cabinet.

3. Inspect the Fan Blades

Dust and grease build-up on the fan blades can make them unbalanced, causing a rattling or buzzing noise. Clean them gently using a soft cloth and mild degreaser if accessible.

4. Check for Foreign Objects

Sometimes small debris or loose screws can get caught near the fan or inside the ducting, especially after cleaning or installation work. Remove any visible obstructions carefully.

5. Examine the Motor and Ducting

If the noise continues, the issue may be with the fan motor or duct connection. A worn motor bearing or vibrating ducting can cause persistent rattling. You may need a technician to inspect or replace these parts.

6. When to Call a Professional

If tightening and cleaning don’t solve the problem, contact a qualified appliance engineer. Persistent rattling could lead to further damage or reduced performance over time.

Keeping your cooker hood clean and well-secured helps prevent noise issues and ensures efficient extraction for years to come.
