Why Is My Fridge Running but Not Cooling?

If your fridge motor is running but the inside feels warm, it’s usually a sign that something is stopping the cold air from circulating properly. Here are some of the most common causes and fixes.

1. Blocked Air Vents or Overloaded Shelves

When your fridge is too full, cold air can’t flow freely around the compartments. Check that food items aren’t blocking the air vents inside the fridge.

2. Dirty Condenser Coils

The condenser coils at the back or bottom of your fridge can get covered in dust over time. Clean them gently with a brush or vacuum every few months to help your fridge cool efficiently.

3. Faulty Evaporator Fan

If the fridge section is warm but the freezer is still cold, the evaporator fan may have stopped working. This part usually requires professional repair or replacement.

4. Temperature Settings Are Incorrect

Double-check that your fridge temperature is set between 3°C and 5°C. Accidentally setting it too high will prevent proper cooling.

5. Compressor or Thermostat Problems

If the compressor is running constantly but not cooling, the issue could be with the thermostat or compressor itself. These components often need diagnosis by a qualified engineer.

When to Call a Professional

If you’ve checked the vents, cleaned the coils, and adjusted the settings but your fridge still isn’t cooling, it’s time to contact a certified appliance technician. Continuing to run the fridge may waste energy or worsen the fault.
